Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
To all my spouse friends; thank you, thank you, thank you!

I (along with several hundred other military spouses) was invited to the White House Tuesday morning for breakfast on the South Lawn! We had fresh fruit and pastries as the Marine Band played. After Secretary of Defense, Robert Bates gave a short speech, country music star Phil Vassar sang the National Anthem. Then we were recognized and thanked by President Bush for what he views as one of the hardest jobs in the military. He honored six spouses with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. He ended his wonderfully encouraging speech by asking God to Bless us, our families, loved ones and the United States. Then Phil Vassar sang a few more songs as we waited to go on a tour of the White House.

I walked away from this experience feeling honored and appreciated in a way that I never have before. It was an amazing morning! The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, and I spent the day with some fabulous women. (Thanks for a great day Susan, Mary and Amy!)

I plan to share further details of the day in later posts. In the mean time, if you are interested, you can read, watch or listen to the speech here.

  3. Wow, that does sound like an amazing experience. I’m so glad you were able to go. And I have to agree I do think the family left behind have it just as hard as their spouses sent overseas. I’m glad the President took the time to visit with spouses at a luncheon too. :)
